Cobden- William Michael "Bill" Melfi, 94, of Cobden, passed away at 6:05 AM, Thursday, September 7, 2023 at Herrin Hospital.

William was born on July 27, 1929 in Chicago to Joseph and Anna (Perone) Melfi.  After high school he enlisted in the US Air Force and served as a clerk at a Georgia base.  Once honorably discharged, he began a long career as a bus driver and timekeeper for the Chicago Transit Authority.

Bill was catholic and a former member of the Teamsters.  He was an independent man who kept to himself and enjoyed listening to country music and the Chicago Cubs.

He is survived by two sons and one daughter- David Melfi of Carterville, John Melfi and wife Brenda of Cobden and Kathleen Wiegand and husband Robert of Punta Gorda, FL, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 7 sisters.

Memorial arrangements were entrusted to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Services in Herrin.
