Energy- Sandra Kay "Sandy" Carpenter, 75, of Energy, formerly of Herrin, passed away at 3:17 AM, Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Herrin Hospital.

Sandy was born on June 24, 1948 in Olney, IL to Marion Leon and Katherine Ellen (Martino) Piper.

She was a homemaker for several years before beginning a career at Norge in Herrin and retiring as a cook at Thorntons Restaurant in Herrin.

She was a talented lady who enjoyed crocheting, baking cookies and cakes, coloring and working puzzels.  She was a Christian and also liked listening to country and gospel music, cheering for the San Francisco 49ers and watching the Hallmark channel.  She loved her children and grandchildren and time spent with family and friends.

Sandy is survived by her son- Shane Flare and wife Dawn of DeSoto, daughter- Sheena Carpenter of Johnston City; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brothers- Rex Piper of Herrin and Bo South and wife Susan of Herrin; sisters- Tammy Augustine and husband Steve of Waterloo and Cricket Ladd of Johnston City and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers- Dick Piper, Mike South and Terry Stevenson and sister- Tonya South.

She will be cremated, and a celebration of her life will be held later with family and friends.  Memorial arrangements were entrusted to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Home in Herrin.
