Herrin- Richard Lee Prewitt, 82, of Herrin, passed away at 7:56 AM, Friday, March 14, 2025 at his home.
Richard was born on August 2, 1942 in Herrin to Earl Raymond and Edith May (Bird) Prewitt. He married Josephine H. Lovall on January 9, 1966 in Litchfield, IL. She preceded him in death on February 18, 2019.
He served his country bravely while enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He served as an electrician while stationed in Italy. Once honorably discharged he began a long career as a coal miner and retired from Old Ben #26 as an electrician. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
Richard enjoyed spending time eating out at different places with friends and family and reading and learning as much as he could about whatever topic interested him at the moment. He could usually be found on his computer or reading most every day. In his younger years he had a motorcycle and enjoyed riding with his friends.
Survivors include his daughter- Tammy Holland and husband Kevin of Herrin, son- David DeWitt and wife Joyce of Taylorville, daughter- Tina Aud of Olive Branch, grandchildren- Candy Ticer and husband Josh of Herrin, Bradi Pullum and husband Bo of Makanda, Lance Baldwin of Herrin and Stephon Mincey of Herrin; several great grandchildren; sisters- Evelyn Williams and husband Terry of Herrin and Dodie Beechler and husband Rick of Nilwood as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and grandson- Korey Baldwin.
He will be cremated and memorial services with military rites provided by the United States Army and veterans from the Carterville and Herrin American Legion Posts be held at Herrin City Cemetery at 1:00 PM, Monday, May 19,2025. Memorial arrangements were entrusted to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Home in Herrin.
Memorial donations are suggested to the US Veterans Administration and may be mailed to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Home/ 501 S. 12th/ Herrin, IL 62948.
