Obituary

Carbondale- Kenneth Charles "Ken" Smith, 65, of Carbondale, passed away at 5:18 PM, Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at his home. Ken was born on March 2, 1959 in Lancaster, PA to William F. and Phyllis A. (Reed) Smith. He married the love of his life- Karen J. Tolson on June 12, 1982 at the Herrin First Presbyterian Church. She survives of the family home. He was a dedicated and hardworking man who received his bachelor's from SIU-Carbondale and his master's in physical therapy from Maryville University. He worked many years as a physical therapist for Hospital Sisters Health Systems in Effingham, Springfield and Belleville. He retired two years ago after 24 years of service. He was a man of faith and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Herrin. He loved his family and devoted himself to coaching and teaching his two sons- Jeremy and Nathan. He coached their baseball teams and took them hunting and camping on the family farm in Pope County. He loved to travel to Myrtle Beach and pass the time people watching. He is survived by his beloved wife- Karen Smith of Carbondale; sons- Jeremy Smith of Carbondale and Nathan (Caly) Smith of Herrin; brother- Scott (Vicki) Smith of St. Peters, MO; and numerous family and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. He will be cremated and a private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial arrangements were entrusted to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in Herrin, IL and will be accepted at McCluskie-Miller Funeral Home/ 501 S. 12 th / Herrin, IL 62948.
