Obituary

Energy- John Charles Gelgut, 65, of Energy, passed away at 11:09 PM, Thursday, July 3, 2026 at Herrin Hospital.

John was born on January 5, 1961 in Chicago, Illinois to Kaessy and Lillie (Arnold) Gelgut. He married Lori Ward on Valentines Day 2009 at Lone Oak Baptist Church. She survives of Energy.

John served as an Illinois State Trooper for 25 years prior to his retirement. He began his career in the Chicago District and then transferred to Ullin and retired from Du Quoin.

He was a faithful member of Lone Oak Baptist Church in Energy where he sang specials and in the choir. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. In his spare time he enjoyed quiet time with his family, travelling with Lori, trips to White Castle with a friend and collecting trains. He was a trained Weather Spotter and was a talented singer and drummer.

He is survived by his beloved wife- Lori (Ward) Gelgut of Energy; son- John Mark Gelgut of Marion; numerous nieces and nephews and a close knit circle of friends. He is also survived by his beloved pets- Maci and Pixie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter- Kalyn Michele Gelgut, sister- Karen Dupiere, father and mother in law- Snookie and Susie Ward and brother in law- Rusty Ward

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Lone Oak Baptist Church /809 Ryan Drive/ Energy, IL 62933. Pastor Corey Black and Rev. Ralph Brandon will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. An honor guard will be provided by the Illinois State Police. Visitation will be from 11:00 Am until time of service, Thursday at Lone Oak Baptist Church in Energy. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to McCluskie Funeral Home in Herrin.

Memorial donations are suggested to Lone Oak Baptist Church and will be accepted at the church or mailed to McCluskie Funeral Home 501 S. 12th/ Herrin, IL 62948.
