Herrin- John Edward Calcaterra, age 74, of Herrin, Illinois, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025 at Franklin Hospital in Benton.

He was born on December 21, 1950 to Joseph and Isabel (Boland) Calcaterra.

He was a beloved father, uncle, brother and friend to many. He was a proud Vietnam veteran. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. Once honorably discharged, John returned home to work as a Carpenter for many years and would carry his love of woodworking both professionally and as a hobby throughout his life. He worked for Centerstone for over 30 years prior to his retirement.

John enjoyed fishing specifically for crappie because he said it tasted the best. He was a talented baseball player as a youth and passed his love of baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals to his family. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW and American Legion.

He is survived by Renee Lowe, daughter, of Herrin IL, Brian Calcaterra, son, of Benton IL, Jodi (Jordan) Miller, daughter, of Herrin IL, Eva Calcaterra, granddaughter, of Lisle IL, Emma Miller, granddaughter, of Herrin IL, Lyric Miller, grandson of Herrin IL, Nancy Pitman, sister, of Herrin IL, Steve Gwaltney, best friend, of New Port Richey, FL and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents and his beloved grandson Gavin Lowe.

A funeral mass will be held at 12 noon on Friday, April 4, 2025 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin.  Father Mark Reyling will officiate.  Burial with military rites performed by the Herrin and Carterville VFW and American Legion Posts with assistance from the United States Marine Corp will follow at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin.  A visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of mass, Friday, April 4, 2025 in the Gathering Room of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin.  Funeral arrangements were entrusted to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Home in Herrin.

Memorial donations are suggested to St. Jude's Children's Hospital and will be accepted at the church or mailed to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Home/501 S. 12th St/ Herrin, IL  62948.
