Herrin- Jackie "Lloyd " Summers, 85, of Herrin, formerly of Energy, passed away at 1:02 AM, Sunday, January 14, 2024 at his home.
Lloyd was born on February 16, 1938 in Carbondale to Bennie L. and Gladys M. (Johnson) Summers. He married Betty Helms on Christmas Eve 1955 in Boskeydell. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2016.
Lloyd served his country bravely while enlisted in the United States Air Force. For eight and half years he worked as a radio intercept operator and crypto-analytic specialist which involved breaking enemy codes. Once honorably discharged, he began working in the construction industry with Jim Cecil before beginning a 28-year career with the United States Postal Service in Herrin. He retired in 1993 as assistant Postmaster.
Lloyd was a Christian and a longtime member of Lone Oak Baptist Church in Energy. He served as both deacon and trustee at different times and played the bass guitar at church for close to 40 years. He was a gifted musician who used his love of God and gospel music as the bass guitarist for the "Truthseekers Gospel Quartet". He was also active civically within the community of Energy where he served on the Village Board for many years as well as the Herrin Unit #4 School Board in the 1970's.
He was a talented coach and enjoyed coaching Little League for his son and daughters as well as coaching the Herrin Women's Travelling Softball team for several years. He loved all things Tiger Athletics and could be spotted at the ball diamonds, football field and basketball courts regularly. Lloyd liked to travel; especially to Branson with his family and to car shows to look at classic cars and and trucks. He also liked to spend time outdoors; fishing and hunting, showing horses and Barrel Racing with his daughter. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his longtime very special friend- Linda Lattuada of Herrin; daughters- Kendra Brewer of Herrin, Lynette Gray of Mesquite, TX and Michele Summers of Antioch, TN; son- Matthew Summers and wife Shermalee of Marion; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister- Debra Brinker and husband Paul of Murphysboro and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers- Gene and Floyd Summers and sisters- Pauline McGeath, Doris Summers, Florene Dosset and Joyce Reed.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, January 19, 2024 at Lone Oak Baptist Church/ 809 Ryan Drive/ Energy, IL 62933. Pastor David Dyer will officiate. Burial with military rites performed by the Carterville and Herrin American Legion and VFW Posts with assistance from the United States Air Force will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until time of service Friday, January 19, 2024 at Lone Oak Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Home in Herrin.
