Obituary

Herrin- Clifton B. "Kick" Gosnell, 73, of Herrin, passed away at 4:05 AM, Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at Shawnee Senior Living in Herrin.

He was born on October 25, 1950 in Herrin to Pete and Ola Mae (Hawkins) Gosnell, Jr.  He graduated High School from Zeigler-Royalton.  He served his country bravely as a Military Police Officer while enlisted in the US Army during Vietnam.

Once honorably discharged, he returned home and began a long career as a correctional officer for the US Federal Penitentiary in Marion.  He also owned and operated Gosnell Appliance Repair in Herrin for many years.  He retired from corrections after a 25-year career and then later retired from appliance repair in 2018.

He married his first wife, Debbie Lingle on August 22, 1970 in Herrin.  He later married Cheryal R. Childers on September 10, 1983 in Herrin and she preceded him in death on October 22, 2017.

Clifton was a Christian and attended church with his brother-in-law in Sesser whenever he was able.  He was very active civically, having served as a Jaycee and board member of the Herrin Junior Ball League for many years.  He could always be seen out at the ballpark as a coach or umpire and later watching his kids and grandkids play ball.  He loved going to their events year-round.

Survivors include his daughter- Genny (Rob) Shadowens of Herrin, grandchildren- Kylie (Brad Rehder) Shadowens of Herrin, Kameron (Hallie Ragain) Shadowens of Johnston City and Karson (Savahnnah Herron) Shadowens of Herrin; great grandchild- Knox of Herrin; beloved step children he helped to raise- Kelly (Mark) McCauley of Springfield, IL, Jeff Hall and Derek Hall of Herrin; step grandchildren- Troy and Dax McCauley, Gage, Houston and Carver Hall, Vander, Waylon and Tanner Hall; step great grandchildren- Remmington and Nash McCauley; sisters- Connie Barham of Johnston City and Barbara (Ralph) Brandon of Carterville and brother- Bruce (Paula) Gosnell of Herrin; several nieces and nephews and many cousins and beloved cat- Audi Murphy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and second wife Cheryal

The funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, September 13, 2024 at Lone Oak Baptist Church/ 809 Ryan Drive/ Energy, IL   62933.  Rev. Ralph Brandon will officiate.  Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery with military rites provided by the Herrin and Carterville American Legion and VFW Posts with assistance from the United States Army.  Visitation will be from 10 Am until 12 Noon, Friday, September 13, 2024 at Lone Oak Baptist Church in Energy.  Funeral services were entrusted to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Home in Herrin.

Memorial donations are suggested to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund and will be accepted at the church or may be mailed to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Home/ 501 S. 12th/ Herrin, IL   62948.
